Top 10 Reasons to Move to Mexico
If you’ve ever dreamed of trading in your snow boots for flip-flops or your office cubicle for a hammock strung between palm trees, then Mexico should be at the top of your list. Whether it's the vibrant culture, the endless sunshine, or the affordability that calls to you, there's a reason (or ten!) why Mexico is the place to be this year.
My Top 10 Reasons to Move to Mexico
1. YEAR-ROUND SUNSHINE
Imagine waking up every morning to the warm embrace of the sun, not just in the summer but all year round. In Mexico, especially in places like Playa del Carmen and Tulum, the sun is your loyal companion. You can plan beach days in January without checking the weather forecast—a dream come true for anyone escaping colder climates.
I remember the first January I spent in Playa del Carmen. Back home, people were battling icy winds while I was sipping fresh coconut water by the ocean, wondering why I hadn't moved sooner.
2. Rich Cultural Heritage
From ancient Mayan ruins to colorful festivals, Mexico is a country steeped in history and culture. Living here means immersing yourself in traditions that date back thousands of years. Every day is a celebration, whether it’s a local fiesta or just the daily rhythm of life.
In addition, many of the most popular places people choose to live, attract people from all across the country, Latin America, and the world. As such, they become cultural melting pots.
3. AFFORDABILITY
Mexico offers an incredible lifestyle at a fraction of the cost you might expect. Your lifestyle can definitely influence your cost of living. With that said, for the most part, whether it’s dining out, renting a home, or buying property, your money goes a lot further here. And let's not forget, the quality of life is excellent—think fresh food, affordable healthcare, and a thriving expat community in many places like Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum.
I was floored when I realized I could get an apartment with ocean views and a rooftop pool for the price of a tiny apartment back in Canada. Plus, my weekly grocery bill? A fraction of what it used to be, with double the flavor.

4. AMAZING FOOD—AND TACOS GALORE!
From street tacos to gourmet dining, Mexico’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses. Living here means having access to fresh, local ingredients and a diverse range of flavors. Whether you’re a foodie or just love a good meal, you’ll never run out of new dishes to try.
When I first settled in to Playa del Carmen, I used to have lunch almost everyday at a local taco stand and grab a fresh juice on my way home. These are the simple pleasures of daily life here.
5. Proximity to the U.S. and Canada
Mexico’s location makes it easy to stay connected with friends and family back home. With direct flights and relatively short travel times, you can hop on a plane and be back in the U.S. or Canada in just a few hours. The ease of travel makes living abroad feel much closer to friends and family. Plus, this geographic proximity makes it easier to coordinate time zones for remote work.
6. VACATION BECOMES A WAY OF LIFE
Mexico is blessed with some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. From the crystal-clear cenotes of the Yucatán to the dramatic cliffs of Baja California, there’s no shortage of natural wonders to explore.
When I first moved to Mexico, I would go watch the sun rise over the ocean every morning and every weekend I would go explore a new beach or hidden cenote. I took up bachata dancing and scuba diving as hobbies. The proximity to other popular travel destinations also made it easy to explore other parts of Mexico. Vacation became a way of life.
7. THRIVING EXPAT COMMUNITIES
Mexico is home to a vibrant and welcoming expat community. In places like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and San Miguel de Allende, you’ll find people from all over the world who have chosen to make Mexico their home. This means plenty of opportunities to make friends, network, and get involved in local activities. The local and expat community here is like a second family.
Everyday I bump into familiar faces. People greet each other on the street. At some of the restaurants I go to regularly, the chef comes out to greet me. Whenever I want to meet new people, I engage in the various Facebook Groups and WhatsApp Chat Groups. Neighbors look out for each other. While it easy to find solitude here, you never feel alone.
8. EASY ACCESS TO ADVENTURE
Living in Mexico means that adventure is always at your doorstep. Whether it’s diving in the cenotes, hiking through lush jungles, or exploring ancient ruins, there’s always something new to discover. When you settle in here, you’ll watch more sunsets than Netflix.
9. SLOWER-PACE OF LIFE
Life in Mexico tends to move at a slower pace, allowing you to truly enjoy the moment. There’s a focus on community, family, and savoring life’s simple pleasures. If you’re looking to escape the rat race, Mexico offers a welcome change of pace.
Slower does not mean less productive. Just the opposite. The lower stress levels translate into better quality of focus and work. I regularly hit new business milestones after moving here.
10. REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITIES
With the growing popularity of Mexico as a destination for expats and digital nomads, the real estate market here is booming. Whether you’re looking for an investment property, a vacation home, or a permanent residence, there are plenty of opportunities to find your dream home in paradise.
Are You Ready to Move to Mexico?
Mexico offers an unbeatable combination of culture, natural beauty, affordability, and lifestyle that’s hard to find anywhere else. Whether you’re considering a move for a few months or a lifetime, this year is the year to make it happen. Don’t just dream about paradise—make it your home.
