8 Best Things to Do in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos Mexico

Living on the Riviera Maya coast, it’s easy to see why Puerto Morelos is a town that has captured hearts and imaginations. This charming fishing village is one of our favorite places to unwind and escape the crowds. Where is Puerto Morelos located? Just a short 30-minute drive from Cancun International Airport, this is a place where life runs a bit slower, the beaches are quiet, and there’s a sense of community you don’t find in bigger cities.

Imagine waking up to the sound of the ocean, checking out a local market at the plaza where artisans and farmers display their goods, and saying “buenos días” to your neighbors—a mix of friendly locals and expats who already feel like family

Puerto Morelos, Mexico, has gone from a vacation destination to a place so many internationals now call home. Whether you are taking a day trip or planning to stay a while, here are some of our favorite things to do in Puerto Morelos:

8 Best Things To Do In Puerto Morelos

  1. Diving & Snorkeling at Puerto Morelos Reef National Park

Puerto Morelos is home to the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. This stunning protected marine area is filled with colorful fish, sea turtles, coral—and even nurse sharks! The reef is located at the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park. The park is also a wonderful place to observe wildlife and go bird-watching.

The best time for diving and snorkeling is from October to March, with early mornings giving you the clearest views.

The reef is only accessible by boat and through tours. Local tour companies and dive shops offer a personalized touch, helping you dive into hidden spots with expert guides who know the waters well.

Wet Set Diving Adventures, located inside Hotel de Ojo, offers diving and snorkeling tours as well as private boat tours. OmDelFin, located in Hotel Hacienda, also offers full and half-day snorkeling tours as well as diving certification courses and excursions.

2. Take a Catamaran Tour of the Caribbean Sea

Not into snorkeling or diving? A catamaran tour is the perfect way to experience the turquoise waters of the Caribbean in comfort and style. Relax on deck as you glide along the stunning coastline, feeling the warm breeze and taking in panoramic views of the sea. Many tours include stops at picturesque sandbars where you can step into the crystal-clear water and enjoy a refreshing swim or simply wade with a drink in hand.

For a top-notch experience, Paradise Catamarans is a standout choice. They offer private excursions tailored to your group, complete with delicious food, open bar, and friendly crew members who ensure your day on the water is unforgettable.

3. Visit Ruta de los Cenotes: An Adventure in the Jungle

Puerto Morelos sits at the start of the Ruta de los Cenotes, a tree-lined road that goes deep into the jungle and leads you to some of Mexico’s most beautiful cenotes. These natural sinkholes are hidden among the jungle and vary in style—from quiet, family-friendly spots to adventurous underground pools. The drive alone is stunning, and there are many local food stands and small restaurants along the way to stop and enjoy.

Our Cenote Picks:

  • Cenote Verde Lucero: Great for families with ziplining and swings.

  • Cenote Siete Bocas: Known for its gorgeous blue waters and multiple swim holes.

  • Cenote Kin Ha: For the thrill-seekers with caves and deeper waters.

If you’re a thrill seeker, you’ll find spots for ATV and zipline adventures like Selvatica Adventure Park and Boca del Puma. These adventure parks are full of natural beauty and adrenaline-pumping fun. Plus, they’re just a short drive from downtown Puerto Morelos.

Map out your own route, take a day to explore, and find your favorite spot to cool off—it’s a way to experience the wild beauty like a local.

4. Low-Key Beach Trips

In Puerto Morelos, beach days mean sandy feet, hammocks at Unico Beach Club, and catching the sunset at My Paradise Beach Club. Unlike the crowded tourist beaches nearby, Puerto Morelos beach is refreshingly calm, with plenty of space to spread out and relax.

Local Beaches:

  • Playa Secreto: Feels like your own private paradise.

  • Playa La Entrega: Great for a swim, with minimal crowds.

  • Playa Del Coral: Snorkel right from the shore—perfect for a quick dip.

5. Stroll Through Downtown Puerto Morelos

The main square is the heartbeat of downtown Puerto Morelos, where locals and visitors alike gather, shop, and hang out. In the mornings, you’ll find families relaxing, kids playing around the leaning lighthouse, and coffee in hand at local cafés.

Stop by Alma Libre Bookstore for an eclectic selection of new and used books in English and Spanish, check out Ku’ul Boutique for handmade jewelry, and wander through Mercado de Artesanías to pick up authentic crafts and sweets.

On Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., you’ll find fresh produce, artisanal products, and goodies at the farmer’s market that takes place along the plaza. On weekends, the plaza is the site of local festivals, concerts, and celebrations.

6. Wander Through the Botanical Garden

Just outside town, the Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin, located just off the federal highway, offers a natural escape with jungle pathways, native plants, and local wildlife. It’s a quiet, shaded retreat where you might spot iguanas or colorful birds.

Be sure to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a more peaceful experience and better chances of seeing wildlife.

7. Taste the Town: Puerto Morelos’ Food Scene

Puerto Morelos, Mexico may be a small town, but it’s packed with flavor. Start with fresh ceviche at El Nicho or dive into the local seafood at La Sirena. Boquinete Seafood & Grill serves legendary fish tacos and grilled octopus—ask the locals, and they’ll likely point you here first.

There are also dining options for every preference and budget. Grab vegan pizza at Layla Guest House or a smoothie or morning latte at Mangata.

If you want to sample the day’s freshest catches, El Merkadito and Mar-Bella Fish Market offer daily catches such as whole snapper and hogfish.

8. Day Trips from Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos sits at a central spot on the coast, making it easy to reach Tulum’s ancient ruins, Playa del Carmen’s shops, or Cancun’s beaches within a short drive. There are also the adventure parks of the Xcaret group, or the fun of the GO! Outlet mall nearby too.
